No couple would ever want to go through divorce. But when it happens, the most common reason tends to be “irreconcilable differences” or “psychological incapacity” – that is – the incapability to get along or of one or both spouses to fulfill the requirements of marriage. One of the reasons where psychological incapacity is seen is through fraud or concealment, because the law believes that a married couple must remain honest and faithful to each other. But should things like past plastic surgery be included in the list of things you must tell your spouse? Somewhere in northern China, there happened to be one of the most bizarre and outrageous divorce cases of all time—where a man files divorce against his wife and even sues her—for being concealing her plastic surgery and her “former” look.

In recent news, Jian Feng filed was actually awarded a large sum of money in a divorce along with a lawsuit against his wife on grounds that she had gotten him to marry her under “false pretenses”. This was the reason given by Mr. Feng, since he said that she had him to believe that he was marrying this “beautiful” woman because she was just that—naturally beautiful. But apparently that was not the case when Mr. Feng and his wife had conceived a child. In his own words, Mr. Feng had described the baby as “hideously ugly”, with the baby not even remotely resembling him or his wife. This suddenly led to allegations that his wife was having a relationship outside their marriage, and that the child was the fruit of some affair. Mr. Feng had a very strong belief that such a child could not have come from the DNA of either his or his wife’s bloodline.

The charges of adultery, to Mr. Feng’s disappointment, were false. It turned out however, that his wife, whom he considered evidently attractive – had in fact undergone several plastic surgery procedures. The wife eventually admitted that all of the treatments she had already undergone prior the marriage had amounted to almost $100,000. She said that she decided to keep this information to herself because of the fear that her husband might not want her as much as he did before. After knowing this, everything suddenly made sense to Mr. Feng, and that was when he decided to sue his wife.

Amazingly, the judge handling the lawsuit agreed to Jian Feng’s claims, and had awarded him $120,000 in compensation to emotional damages that may have resulted from the marriage, along with the approval of the divorce papers. Shortly after, the wife’s before-and-after photographs circulated the internet, showing that she hardly looked like what she did after the surgery.

This news had stunned the entire world of plastic surgery, since it has already been proven that a lawsuit against “fake beauty” can be won in court. It should be noted that the only reason why cosmetic surgery has evolved into what it is today is because of two reasons: first, that there are people out there with facial deformities that only plastic surgery can fix, and second, that there are a lot of people all across the globe who are unhappy about how they look and are ashamed by it; these are the main purposes of plastic surgery. The only lesson to be picked up from this story is that before going into any relationship, be it romantic or not, is that the people involved should always be honest with each other, even if it concerns their physical appearance. That way, unjust yet valid lawsuits like this could be avoided, and that plastic surgery can continue its role in society of making people happy and feeling better about themselves.
